A septic system usually gives warning signs before it fails completely. Catching them early can mean a smaller repair.

Common warning signs

  • Slow drains or gurgling pipes throughout the house, not just one fixture.
  • Sewage odors inside the house or around the tank and drain field.
  • Wet, soggy or unusually green areas over the drain field, even in dry weather.
  • Sewage backing up into drains, tubs or toilets.

What to do

Reduce water use and have the system inspected as soon as you can. Avoid driving or parking over the drain field. An inspection finds out whether the problem is the tank, the pipes or the drain field.
